The Truth About What Equipment I Use…

The one thing that is very important to remember is that I am visually impaired, but not fully blind. So, when looking for equipment, I tend to look for things that are labeled “low vision”. So, if you are looking for pieces of equipment that may help someone you know that is totally blind, this may not be the post for you.

Like I previously mentioned, I am visually impaired and therefore not totally blind so the equipment that I use compared to someone with no sight may differ quite a bit. The truth is, right now I do not use any equipment. You are probably thinking, she just titled this post about equipment and she doesn’t even own any?

Let me explain.

When I was in late elementary and middle school, I used quite a few pieces of equipment. Ranging from devices with audio books to monitors with cameras attached, I used it all. One of the biggest pieces of equipment that I used was called a CCTV. In short, a CCTV is a computer monitor hooked to a small camera on wheels and then whatever the camera is looking at, the monitor shows on its screen.

When I made the big move from Maryland to Ohio, there came another big change. I transferred from public school to an all-girls private school. Since private schools are not funded by the state, I lost all my equipment when I moved and replacing it would cost thousands.

The summer before my senior year of high school I attended a program where they had mentioned me going through a government organization outside of my school to get equipment for my last year in high school and for college. Before I knew it, I was sitting in a room getting contact numbers for organizations from which would come out and do evaluations. This was a true call from God.

All these calls and evaluations happened between October and December. Now, in January it is a week before all my new equipment comes. I don’t want to reveal it to you yet, but can I just say that it truly is a blessing to finally be considered for this revolutionary equipment that could help me so much.

Stay tuned for me update on my equipment coming soon. If you would like a post explaining what equipment I got, please let me know in the comments below!
